Puntiagudo Onofre Ortiz Espadin
Puntiagudo is a project dedicated to highlighting traditional mezcaleros and the artistry of single-producer, small-batch mezcal. Maestro mezcalero Onofre Ortiz works in San Pedro Quiatoni, Oaxaca, crafting Espadín that reflects both his family’s heritage and the rugged terroir of the region. Everything is done by hand and with patience: mature agaves are roasted in an earthen pit, crushed with a stone tahona, and fermented naturally before double distillation in copper pot stills. The brand’s name, Puntiagudo (“pointy”), nods to the sharp tips of the agave leaves — a reminder that each bottle begins in the fields, under the Oaxacan sun.
Tasting Notes
This Espadín opens with a soft, smoky aroma layered with green herbs and sun-dried fruit. The palate shows balance: roasted agave sweetness wrapped in gentle smoke, hints of black pepper, and a touch of citrus peel. A mineral edge carries through, giving structure and clarity, while the finish lingers with warm spice and clean, earthy smoke.
Serving Suggestion
Sip neat to appreciate its depth, or use in a Mezcal Negroni for a smoky twist on a classic.
