Strega
Created in 1860 in the town of Benevento, Campania, Strega is one of Italy’s most iconic herbal liqueurs. Its name means “witch” in Italian, a nod to Benevento’s folklore as a gathering place for witches and mystical rites. The recipe blends around 70 botanicals — including saffron, fennel, juniper, and mint — into a spirit that has become famous both for its golden color and its role in Italian culture. Long marketed as a symbol of love and fidelity, Strega is also tied to literature and film, often appearing as a shorthand for mystery and intrigue.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant yellow in the glass, Strega offers a bold herbal nose of mint, fennel, and juniper lifted by saffron spice. The palate is bittersweet and complex, balancing cooling mint and warm spice with earthy herbal tones. It finishes long and slightly resinous, with saffron and anise lingering against a honeyed backdrop.
Serving Suggestion
Serve neat as a digestif, over ice, or in cocktails where its golden color and bold spice add intrigue.
